About the gardens
Marina Bay's green quarter opened in stages from 2011 as part of Singapore's long-term project to become a "city in a garden". It sits on roughly one square kilometre of reclaimed land facing the downtown skyline. Most visitors treat it as one attraction, but it is really three: Bay South (the site with the domes and Supertrees), Bay East (a long waterfront promenade), and Bay Central (mostly a public walkway linking the other two).
The domes were designed to demonstrate that a fully-conditioned glasshouse can run on less energy per visitor than an equivalent air-conditioned shopping mall. Waste biomass from garden maintenance is burned on-site to generate electricity, which cools the domes.
What you will remember
- The scale of the Cloud Forest waterfall on the first walk in — most photographs undersell it.
- The temperature drop when you step from Singapore's humidity into the Flower Dome — about 10 °C difference.
- The Supertrees' underside canopy at dusk, when the built-in solar cells switch to lit mode.
Practical notes
The outdoor gardens are free to enter around the clock. Only the two glasshouses and the Supertree treetop walkway are ticketed. The Garden Rhapsody light show plays twice each evening on the outdoor Supertree Grove — no ticket needed.
